Image-Based Interview Questions
Shortlister now supports image-based interview questions, allowing you to present an image alongside a question for applicants to respond to.
What are image-based interview questions?
Image-based interview questions allow an image to be displayed at the same time as a question is shown to an applicant.
The applicant views the image while preparing and recording their response, using it as context for their answer. The image remains visible throughout the response window.
Why use image-based questions?
1. Stronger anti-cheat protection
Including an image makes it significantly harder for applicants to prepare scripted answers in advance.
Even if question text is shared or leaked, applicants must still interpret and respond to the visual information presented to them in the moment — encouraging genuine, spontaneous answers.
2. Deeper insight into candidate ability
Images allow you to assess more than just verbal recall. They help surface how applicants:
-
Interpret information
-
Apply judgement and reasoning
-
Communicate clearly under pressure
-
Respond to unfamiliar or real-world scenarios
This leads to richer responses and more meaningful differentiation between candidates.
Common use cases
Image-based questions work particularly well for:
-
Scenario-based questions
Asking applicants how they would respond to a situation shown in an image -
Situational Judgement-style assessments
Exploring decision-making and prioritisation -
Role-specific tasks
Interpreting diagrams, data, environments, or written materials relevant to the role -
Admissions and employability interviews
Assessing communication, reasoning, and applied thinking rather than memorised answers -
Early talent and graduate hiring
Creating fairer assessments that don’t advantage rehearsed responses
Candidate experience
From the applicant’s perspective, the experience remains simple and intuitive:
-
The image appears alongside the question
-
There are no additional steps or technical requirements
-
The image simply provides context to support their response
This ensures accessibility while still increasing the depth and quality of assessment.
Best practice tips
To get the most out of image-based questions, we recommend:
-
Using clear, relevant images that directly support the question
-
Asking applicants to describe, interpret, or respond to what they see
-
Keeping instructions concise so the focus remains on reasoning and communication
-
Using images where context matters, rather than purely informational questions
